The article is written at three levels; read as far as you need.
Level 1, for interested readers: what sound is in terms of pressure and air motion, and why the two answer different questions.
Level 2, for people who measure sound: what a p-u probe is, how it works, and why it helps when measuring close to a source.
Level 3, for engineers: instantaneous, active and reactive intensity, near-field behaviour, and the limitations that affect accuracy.
It helps to read sound intensity and direction of arrival as well. That article covers the two-microphone (p-p) probe; this one focuses on the probe that measures particle velocity directly (p-u). Microflown-specific information on this page comes from Microflown's own documents, listed at the end.
Level 1 · Sound has two sides: the air is squeezed, and the air moves
Picture a narrow corridor packed with people. If someone at one end gives a gentle push, the push passes along the whole line: everyone steps forward a little and back again, nobody actually walks to the far end, yet the "push" travels a long way. Sound in air is similar, and two things happen together.
Sound pressure (p): the air is squeezed tighter and then relaxes, like people in the line crowding together and spreading out. Pressure has no direction; at a point it only has a value, "more or less". This is what microphones and sound level meters measure.
Acoustic particle velocity (u): small parcels of air move forward and back, like people in the line stepping forward and back. This velocity has both size and direction, and it is not the speed of sound travelling through air (about 340 m/s); it is a much smaller, slower motion.
A quantity with size only, such as sound pressure or temperature.
A quantity with size and direction, such as particle velocity, sound intensity or wind velocity.
Level 1 · Sound intensity: which way does the sound energy flow?
Sound carries energy. Sound intensity is the amount of sound energy flowing through one square metre each second, in watts per square metre (W/m²), and it points in the direction the energy flows. Conceptually, intensity comes from pressure times particle velocity (p × u) at the same point, averaged over time.
Why multiply? Back in the corridor: if people are squeezed tight (high pressure) at the same moment they step forward (velocity pointing forward), the push really is passed on. If the squeezing and the stepping are out of step, the push just goes out and comes back and gets nowhere. Intensity therefore needs both values together; either one alone is not enough.
In a hard, reverberant meeting room, a microphone in the middle reads almost the same everywhere, because sound arrives from all directions. That number says how loud the room is, but not whether the sound starts at the air-conditioning unit or at the door gap. Knowing which surface the sound energy flows out of lets you trace it back to its origin.
Level 1 · Pressure alone and pressure plus particle velocity answer different questions
| คำถามQuestion | วัดความดันอย่างเดียว (ไมโครโฟน)Pressure only (microphone) | วัดทั้ง p และ u (หัววัด p-u)Both p and u (p-u probe) |

The two do not replace each other. Standardised level measurements, such as environmental or workplace noise, still need a certified sound level meter used as the standard specifies. A p-u probe suits questions about location, direction and energy flow.
Level 2 · What is a p-u probe, and how does it differ from a microphone?
หัววัด p-u คือหัววัดขนาดเล็กที่มีเซนเซอร์สองตัวอยู่ที่ตำแหน่งเดียวกัน ตัว p เป็นไมโครโฟนขนาดเล็กวัดความดันเสียง ตัว u เป็นเซนเซอร์ความเร็วอนุภาคที่ Microflown พัฒนาขึ้น (ชื่อเซนเซอร์คือ Microflown) ซึ่งวัดความเร็วอนุภาคโดยตรง ไม่ได้ประมาณจากความต่างของความดันระหว่างไมโครโฟนสองตัวแบบหัววัด p-pA p-u probe is a small probe with two sensors at the same position. The p sensor is a small microphone measuring sound pressure; the u sensor is the particle velocity sensor developed by Microflown (the sensor itself is called a Microflown), which measures particle velocity directly instead of estimating it from the pressure difference between two microphones, as a p-p probe does.

Level 2 · How does a Microflown sense particle velocity?
Microflown's documents describe a thermal principle, not a diaphragm as in a microphone. The sensor has two very thin platinum wires placed close together. Each wire acts both as a heater and as a temperature sensor (the resistance of platinum changes with temperature).
An electric current heats both wires well above the surrounding air temperature.
As a sound wave passes, the air moves back and forth across the wires. The upstream wire is cooled more; the downstream wire receives some of the heat carried over from the first.
The temperature difference between the two wires is proportional to the particle velocity, and its sign tells which way the air is moving, giving both size and direction.
The temperature difference changes the wires' resistances; the electronics turn this into a signal, and the amplitude and phase response are corrected with the probe's calibration data.
Microflown states that the sensor's sensitivity falls at high frequencies, because heat needs time to travel between the wires and the wires have thermal mass. Amplitude and phase response are therefore corrected, by a dedicated preamplifier, by settings in the analyser, or in post-processing. This is why calibration data always belong to the probe.
Level 2 · Figure-of-eight directivity and source localization
Particle velocity is a vector, so the u sensor is most sensitive to air motion along its axis and hardly responds to motion at right angles to it. Its directivity is a figure of eight. Microflown's documents state that this pattern stays the same across the frequency range and is not changed by the sensor's housing. In practice, Microflown explains, the sensor rejects part of the sound field arriving from the sides, which helps localization in noisy places.
For localization, intensity adds one more clue. A paper by Microflown's founder shows a loudspeaker in a box with a small hole in the front. Scanned over the hole, the sound pressure is spread widely, while the particle velocity towards the box is far more concentrated, and the intensity normal to the box changes sign as the probe passes over the source position, which pins the source down clearly.
Level 2 · Why a p-u probe is useful close to a source
Near a source, particle velocity exceeds pressure: Microflown's documents explain that close to a source, especially at low frequencies, the particle velocity level is higher than the sound pressure level (the near-field effect), so the wanted signal stands out from surrounding sound.
Near a rigid surface, surrounding sound cancels: sound hitting a rigid surface and its reflection travel in opposite directions, so their particle velocities largely cancel close to the surface, while their pressures add. Microflown uses this to explain why particle velocity measured close to a surface is less affected by background noise.
In reverberant rooms: a Microflown paper states that in reverberant conditions the signal-to-noise ratio of particle velocity mapping is higher than that of pressure mapping, so the object does not have to be moved to an anechoic room.
Small size: Microflown notes that a p-u probe is much smaller than a p-p probe, so it gets close to surfaces and into corners easily.
Less affected" does not mean "unaffected". If background noise is as loud as or louder than the source of interest, or another source is close to the probe, the result can still be disturbed. Compare with the source on and off whenever possible.
Scan & Paint 2DLevel 2 · From one probe to a sound map: Scan & Paint 2D
Microflown builds sound maps from a single p-u probe with Scan & Paint 2D. The operator moves the probe by hand over the surface while a camera records its position; the software splits the recorded signal by grid cell on the image and computes the spectrum of each cell. The result is a map of pressure, particle velocity or intensity over the image of the object. Microflown designed the method for sound that is time-stationary during the scan.

Level 3 · Instantaneous, active and reactive intensity
The word "intensity" is used in several senses; they need to be kept apart before reading results.
Physical meaning |
|---|---|---|
The energy flow rate at that instant; it swings and can be negative even when net energy flows outwards |
Time average of p × u; the part where p and u are in phase | ความหมายทางกายภาพPhysical meaningการไหลสุทธิของพลังงานที่แผ่ออกไปจริง นี่คือ "ความเข้มเสียง" ที่ใช้คำนวณกำลังเสียงและบอกทิศการไหลThe net flow of energy actually radiated; this is the "intensity" used for sound power and for the direction of flow |
90°The part of p × u where p and u are 90° out of phase | ความหมายทางกายภาพPhysical meaningพลังงานที่ไหลไปแล้วไหลกลับ ไม่มีการไหลสุทธิ พบมากในสนามใกล้และคลื่นนิ่งEnergy that flows out and back with no net transport; strong in near fields and standing waves |
For a single frequency, Microflown's e-book writes the active intensity as I = ½ · p · u · cos φ and the reactive intensity as J = ½ · p · u · sin φ, where p and u are amplitudes and φ is the phase angle between them. At φ = 90° the active intensity is zero, even though a lot of sound energy is present there.
Standing wave (e.g. in a closed tube): sound energy is present, but the active intensity is zero and the reactive intensity is high.
Ideal diffuse field (ideal reverberant room): both active and reactive intensity are zero. Microflown explains that this is why an intensity probe picks up only the direct field from the source.
- ใกล้แหล่งเสียงมาก: p และ u มีเฟสต่างกันเกือบ 90° ความเข้มเสียงแบบรีแอคทีฟสูงเมื่อเทียบกับแบบแอคทีฟ Microflown ระบุว่าอัตราส่วนระหว่างสองค่านี้เป็นตัวชี้คุณภาพที่สำคัญของการวัดความเข้มเสียงด้วยหัววัด p-uVery close to a source: p and u are nearly 90° apart, so reactive intensity is high relative to active intensity. Microflown states that the ratio of the two is an important quality indicator for p-u intensity measurements.
In practice, most "intensity" maps show active intensity normal to the surface. A reactive-intensity map (where the software offers one) shows where the field is strongly near-field, and where intensity values should be read with care.
Level 3 · Very near field, near field and far field
Microflown's e-book divides the behaviour of p and u in front of a vibrating surface into three regions. The boundaries depend on the source size and the wavelength; they are not fixed distances.
| ช่วงRegion | เงื่อนไขโดยประมาณRough condition | พฤติกรรมของ p และ uBehaviour of p and u |
|---|---|---|
Distance small compared with the source size, wavelength longer than the source | พฤติกรรมของ p และ uBehaviour of p and uความเร็วอนุภาคในแนวตั้งฉากเท่ากับความเร็วการสั่นของผิว ความดันถูกกดให้ต่ำ เฟสต่างกันเกือบ 90°Normal particle velocity equals the surface vibration velocity; pressure is suppressed; phase difference close to 90° |
Particle velocity falls with distance faster than pressure |
Far compared with the wavelength | พฤติกรรมของ p และ uBehaviour of p and up และ u มีเฟสเกือบตรงกัน ลดลงตามระยะในอัตราเดียวกันp and u nearly in phase and falling with distance at the same rate |
This has two important consequences for reading maps. First, because particle velocity in the very near field is almost equal to the surface vibration, a particle velocity map taken right at the surface shows the panel's vibration pattern; Microflown uses this for contactless vibration measurement. Second, some vibration does not radiate. Microflown's e-book explains that when bending waves in a plate are shorter than the acoustic wavelength in air, the air in front of the plate is just pumped back and forth between parts moving in opposite directions; such waves decay quickly with distance and carry no energy away. So a spot of high particle velocity is not necessarily where most sound energy is radiated. To know which part really sends energy out, read the active-intensity map as well.
Level 3 · p-u and p-p probes: weaknesses in different places
Microflown's e-book gives a balanced comparison. A p-p probe is sensitive to fields with a high pressure-intensity index, such as strong sound from other sources or a reverberant room, but not to reactive fields. A p-u probe is the other way round: sensitive to highly reactive fields but not to the pressure-intensity index, so it may be less affected by extraneous noise but more affected by reactive near fields. Microflown itself writes that both limitations can be serious in practice and that neither method can be called superior.

This is why Microflown recommends scanning for intensity further from the surface than for localization: localization wants a strong signal close to the surface, while intensity wants a less reactive field.
Level 3 · Calibration, frequency, distance and environment
- การสอบเทียบ: เซนเซอร์ความเร็วอนุภาคไม่ได้วัดความดัน จึงสอบเทียบด้วยตัวสอบเทียบเสียงแบบไมโครโฟนทั่วไปโดยตรงไม่ได้ ต้องใช้สนามเสียงที่รู้ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง p และ u งานของ Microflown อธิบายการใช้ท่อคลื่นนิ่งสำหรับความถี่ต่ำร่วมกับการสอบเทียบในห้องไร้เสียงสะท้อนสำหรับความถี่สูง และต่อมาพัฒนาวิธีใช้แหล่งเสียงทรงกลมที่มีลูกสูบ ร่วมกับไมโครโฟนอ้างอิง ให้ครอบคลุมทั้งย่านความถี่ Microflown ระบุไว้ด้วยว่าการสอบเทียบหัววัด p-u ซับซ้อนกว่าหัววัด p-pCalibration: a particle velocity sensor does not measure pressure, so it cannot be calibrated directly with an ordinary microphone calibrator; it needs a sound field in which the relation between p and u is known. Microflown's work describes a standing wave tube for low frequencies plus anechoic calibration for high frequencies, and later a method using a spherical source with a piston and a reference microphone to cover the full range. Microflown also notes that calibrating a p-u probe is more complex than a p-p probe.
Field check: the product page of Microflown's current probe states that it works with Microflown's field sound calibrator. Check before and after every measurement, and keep the probe's calibration certificate with the measurement data.
Phase matters as much as amplitude: intensity is calculated from the phase between p and u. In a near field where p and u are nearly 90° apart, a small phase error becomes a large intensity error. Microflown states that the acceptable reactivity depends on the accuracy of the phase calibration.
Frequency: Microflown states a range of 20 Hz to 14 kHz for the Scan & Paint 2D system. The usable range on a given job depends on the probe, the distance, the time spent in each grid cell and the background noise; low frequencies need slower scanning for good statistics.
Wind and airflow: the Microflown sensor was developed from an air-flow sensor, so steady air movement, such as air from a diffuser, outdoor wind or hot air from machinery, also affects the signal. Each probe's datasheet states a maximum airflow. Avoid measuring directly in an air stream, or use the wind protection specified by the manufacturer.
Distance: close to the surface the signal is strong and nearby sources separate well, but the field is highly reactive and particle velocity may show vibration that does not radiate. Further away the field is less reactive, but detail is lost and surrounding sound matters more. Choose the distance to fit the question.
Limitations to keep in mind
A single probe measures one point at a time, so an image needs a scan, and the sound must stay steady throughout. Intermittent sound or changing speed during the scan distorts the map.
Without a fixed reference sensor, points scanned at different times have no phase relation, so animated maps or phase-resolved vibration shapes are not possible.
A map shows what happens at the scanned plane; it does not see through the surface and does not reveal the mechanical cause automatically.
Values read from a map are not standardised results, such as sound levels to IEC 61672, sound power to the ISO 3740 series or ISO 9614, or sound insulation to ISO 16283. Those numbers require the standard's own method.
Wind, airflow and very high temperatures may exceed what the probe tolerates; check the datasheet of the probe model in use.
Example scenario
An electrical cabinet in a factory hums. Pressure readings around it are similar on every side, because the room is reverberant and other machines are running. The inspector scans a p-u probe a few centimetres from the cabinet. In the hum's frequency band, the particle velocity map shows several high spots on the door, but the active-intensity map shows that most of the energy comes from a single side ventilation opening; the spots on the door are vibration that radiates little. The fix therefore starts at the opening, followed by a repeat measurement in the same condition to confirm.

Frequently asked questions
Is particle velocity the speed of sound?
No. The speed of sound is how fast the wave travels through air, about 340 m/s. Particle velocity is how fast the air itself moves back and forth as the wave passes, which is much smaller and reverses with each cycle.
Can a p-u probe replace a measurement microphone?
Not for standardised level measurements, which need a certified sound level meter. A p-u probe suits localization, direction and energy flow; the two are used together.
How can intensity be zero when the sound is clearly loud?
Because active intensity measures the net energy flow. In a standing wave, or a reverberant room where sound arrives equally from all directions, energy flows back and forth and cancels, so pressure can be high while the net flow is close to zero.
Is measuring as close as possible always best?
Not always. Close to the surface gives a strong signal and fine detail for localization, but the field is highly reactive, so intensity errors grow. Microflown therefore recommends 1 to 5 cm for localization and 5 to 10 cm for intensity.
Is a p-u probe better than a p-p probe?
Microflown's own documents conclude that neither is superior overall: p-p is sensitive to extraneous and reverberant sound, p-u to reactive near fields and phase calibration. Choose to suit the job.
Can it be used where there is wind?
With care, because the sensor responds to moving air. Each probe's datasheet states a maximum airflow; avoid direct air streams or use the manufacturer's wind protection.
